Director's Statement

The idea for ON THE INSIDE brewed in me for a very long time. I first wrote a scene about two guys in a mental institution and had a reading of it for my fellow members of The Ensemble Studio Theater in the basement of a broken down hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This was some of the first dialog I had ever attempted and they encouraged me to expand it into a play. Then I wrote the play into a screenplay, passed it around without an agent, and eventually found producers and investors who understood my passion for the project, and thankfully allowed me to direct it. We shot in Pittsburgh, PA with a dream cast.

I teach acting for a living, with my wife at the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Studio in Santa Monica, CA, and in my professional opinion the actors in this movie performed with tremendous heart at an extraordinary level. I didn’t let on to anyone on the set at the time, but filming that original scene I’d written so long ago was a very intense experience for me. There were these characters who emerged from I-don’t-know-where, so long ago, rendered in all their fullness by Nick Stahl and Pruit Taylor Vince, and they were now going to have the final say. I hope you get a chance to hear them.
